Chapter 10: Moving Onward
Morning found the newlyweds in a meeting with alert military personnel and sleepy-eyed mages. General Papandro led the meeting, first outlining the situation as it now stood, which was miserably bad. The Un forces had stepped up their attacks after the rout at Sharm. Quignish's last garrison had fallen, allowing the Un forces to form a united front and advance in a seemingly unstoppable wave. They had brought in a massive new force from somewhere, and appeared to be massing for a drive towards the capitol.
"We can't allow this," the General stated, grasping his map pointer firmly in both hands. "Obviously. Now, my thought is to deploy small units of you mage folk with each of my encampments. Keeping you lot together would reduce your effectiveness, as far as I can tell. Am I right?"
"To an extent," Erb Shalla said. She rose and inspected the map on the wall behind the general, her white gown sparkling like new fallen snow. "Many of our mages have abilities that will allow them to work alone or in small groups. But there is a core of us, the most powerful, that must remain together." She selected a location in the middle of the projected battle line. "Here. Put the main group here. That way we are central to the action. From this location, we can provide support to all."
"You can do that?" Papandro blinked rapidly in surprise.
"Yes," Erb Shalla replied, smiling. "We may not have personally fought a war before, but we here are all traditionalist enough that we keep the old battle magics alive. And that means we still know the great concert works, that span entire countries and terrify enemies into submission."
"Thank you," was all the General could say. He cleared his throat and waved briskly for the Erb to resume her seat. "Fine. That's settled. Sort out who among you goes to the central location. The rest split into four groups and we'll ship you to the main camps. We'll be doing a general reinforcement and redeployment, so be prepared. The trains will leave at noon."
"Trains!" someone said, sounding excited. Telion smothered a chuckle.
The mages withdrew from the meeting then. Telion was rather surprised to find he considered himself a mage now, not one of the military crowd anymore.
He led them to a meeting room nearby, and they all settled in the chairs with various sounds and shufflings.
"Do we really have to leave again in just a few hours?"
"Shut up, Selkirk," Farven said, without even looking to see who had complained.
"No fear," Telion said, with an easy smile for the tired man. Selkirk had been one of the last to leave the dancing last night, after spending most of the evening flirting with a courtier. Both seemed thoroughly smitten. "You'll like travelling by train, I promise. Unless you're one of the unlucky sods that gets motion sickness, that is. Otherwise, you'll be able to rest just fine. It's a long haul out to the lines, so we'll have sleeper cars.
